Over the last 20 years I have mainly worked with older juniors and professional players but since having two young children of my own that play tennis, I started to work more with mini tennis players from 2016. One of the first things I realised was how differently young juniors react to playing competitions – some very much enjoy the challenge and are very competitive from a young age but a lot feel under pressure and struggle to perform well in that environment.
So in December 2017 I decided to set up a small programme to help players feel more comfortable in competitive situations and also focus more on improving rather than just winning. The programme grew very quickly and both the players and the parents realised the importance of developing their tennis at a young age in order to be more successful when they get older.
As a ‘team’ we now compete together in monthly matchplay sessions which includes both singles and doubles and we also value the importance of the social side of tennis in regular activities away from the tennis court.
The picture on the left is at one of our social events at Gravity trampoline park in December 2019 – I believe it’s so important for the players to have fun on and off the court so they stay involved in the game as they get older.
